Cranford trunk mains replacement works secure a more reliable water supply

A 2km-long section of water mains on the western shore of Mulroy Bay which was prone to bursts has been successfully replaced by Uisce Éireann. The repairs between Coole Upper and Cranford were carried out under Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme and will lead to a more secure and reliable water supply for customers in the area.

The works were carried out along the L12123 at Coole Upper (from the R245 Carrigart Road junction to Coole Chapel). The replacement works involved replacing approximately 2km of aging trunk mains with new, modern pipes. The works also included laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers' property boundaries, connecting it to the customers' water supply.

The works began in early March of this year and were completed in late summer, and were carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

The completed works will provide a number of benefits for the local communities. As well as significantly reducing the volume of drinking water lost into the ground before reaching customers, the upgraded water mains will secure a more reliable water supply for customers by reducing the risks of bursts or other operational issues.

Patricia Lowry, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said that customers in the Cranford and Milford areas can be assured of a cleaner, more reliable water supply as a result of the successful works.

We wish to extend our thanks to the local communities for their patience and cooperation while these essential leakage repair works were carried out,” said Patricia. “The works have reduced the volume of drinking water lost into the ground before ever reaching customers’ taps and will allow for a more reliable and secure water supply for customers in the region.

The Coole Upper to Cranford project formed part of Uisce Eireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme and will help the utility to achieve its 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The National Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018, when the leakage rate stood at 46%.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. Uisce Éireann is investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply.
