The repairs were carried out by specialist crews who worked throughout the night to fix the trunk main located near the Drogheda Business Park Roundabout area.

As the network fills, and supplies return throughout the morning customers may experience discolouration to their supply Customers on higher ground or at the end of the network may experience disruption or an intermittent supply for a number of hours. For more information, please customers can visit our discoloured water page.

Stephen Burke of Uisce Éireann thanked customers for their understanding while these critical repair works were underway.

The works went according to plan and the water is back for the 40,000 people in the town. Some people may have brown water and we would ask these people to run their taps for up to 20 minutes until the water runs clear. We would like to thank everyone, including motorists, for their patience during the duration of these works.”

Uisce Éireann is progressing a critical project to repair a major water main that supplies drinking water to Drogheda. These essential works are necessary to repair a leak on a section of the pipeline that is likely to burst if not fixed. A burst on this pipeline would result in unplanned and widespread water outages impacting the community in Drogheda.

Initial site works will commence on Thursday 29 August. There will be no interruption to supply until Friday night 30 August at 10:30pm when water in the pipeline is switched off, to allow the repair to take place. Due to the size of this pipeline and complexity of the works, specialist teams will work through the night to complete the repair and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible on Saturday 31 August. Project updates will be provided as works progress.

Speaking about the critical nature of the project, Stephen Burke, Uisce Éireann, commented: “Uisce Éireann has identified that this section of water main is at risk of bursting and causing major disruption for customers, unless repair works are carried out. This is a complex and challenging project due to the size, and location of the pipe. Extensive preparation has taken place in advance to enable us to carry out these works and minimise impact on water supplies including the provision of water tankers. Our dedicated teams are in the process of contacting vulnerable customers and other stakeholders that will be impacted by this critical repair. The works are taking place over the weekend and at night to reduce the impact that this will have on schools, hospitals and businesses across Drogheda”.

To facilitate the safe delivery of the project, traffic management will be in place along a portion of the carriageway of the Drogheda Retail Park Roundabout and along a section of the L-1003 to the turn for the Newgrange Business Park from Thursday 29 August until Sunday 1 September. Local and emergency traffic access will be maintained.

Uisce Éireann acknowledges the inconvenience caused by interruptions to water supply and thanks the community in Drogheda for their patience and cooperation while we deliver these essential works.
