Uisce Éireann customers in Castleblayney are enjoying a more secure, reliable water supply after the recent completion of works to replace more than 1,100m of aging cast iron water mains.
Devin Reilly Terrace, St Macartan’s Terrace, Black Island View and Beech Drive are the latest locations in Monaghan to benefit from upgrades to their drinking water network.
The works, which were carried out under Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme, involved replacing approximately 1,100 metres of aging cast iron water mains with new, modern pipes and replacing almost 200 backyard services. The works which commenced in late 2023 in Devin Reilly and mid 2024 in Black Island, were carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
The upgrades also laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.
These completed works will provide a number of benefits for the local community. As well as significantly reducing the volume of drinking water lost into the ground before reaching customers, the upgraded water mains will secure a more reliable water supply for customers by reducing the risks of bursts and other operational issues.
Patricia Lowry, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said that customers can be assured of a more reliable water supply as a result of the successful works.
“We wish to extend our thanks to the local communities for their patience and cooperation while these essential leakage repair works were carried out,” said Patricia. “The works will improve water quality and have also reduced the volume of drinking water lost into the ground before ever reaching customers’ taps and will allow for a more reliable and secure water supply for customers in the region.”
Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the Leakage Reduction Programme. Uisce Éireann is investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030.
Fixing leaks and replacing aging pipes can be a complicated process but Uisce Éireann is making significant progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46% by the end of 2022 it stood at 37%. We are on track to achieve a national leakage rate of 25% by the end of 2030.
