Works progressing to restore water supply in Clifden

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section.

Alternative water supply in place at numerous locations

Uisce Éireann crews are continuing efforts to restore water supply as quickly as possible to customers following a major water main leak in Clifden town, County Galway.

Despite concerted efforts by leak detection experts, it has not been possible to locate the leak due to the the aged underground network and deep location of the damaged water main. Uisce Éireann crews are currently on the ground installing an overground pipe to bypass the existing underground network, in order to restore water supply to customers as soon as possible. Traffic management is in place to ensure the safe delivery of these emergency works, which are expected to be completed this evening.

It is anticipated that supply to customers will be restored tomorrow (Friday) as the reservoir will need to refill to satisfactory levels following completion of the works. A further update will be issued as works progress.

Uisce Éireann understands the inconvenience this issue is causing. To support impacted customers, additional water supplies are available at Tullavoheen Housing Estate, The Spire Housing Estate, Cúirt Cregg Housing Estate, Elm Tree House, Cluid Clifden, SuperValu and the local fire station, Clifden Water Treatment Plant, Clifden Mart carpark, Station House Hotel carpark, the old Courthouse, Clifden District Hospital and St. Anne's Community Nursing Home. These water supplies will remain in place until supply is returned to all customers.

Customers are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from the tanker and to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure, as per HSE advice.
