Repair works completed and water supply restored for impacted customers in Cork City

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section.

Uisce Éireann completed repair works and restored water supply for impacted customers last night in parts of Cork City following a burst to a major trunk water main yesterday afternoon.

Water services teams worked tirelessly on the repairs to limit the impact of the unplanned outage and restore the supply to homes and businesses, as soon as possible.

Sean Lynch, Water Operations Lead thanked impacted customers for their patience and co-operation during these essential repair works. “On behalf of Uisce Éireann, I’d like to thank impacted stakeholders for their patience, co-operation, and assistance. We understand the impact that unplanned outages can have on customers. Repairs of this nature can prove to challenging given the location, and I’d like to thank the crews who put in a big effort to return supply as quickly as possible.”

Following any significant activity on the water network, we usually see increased instances of sediment becoming dislodged from the old cast iron pipes, resulting in temporary discoloured water at customers’ taps. If your tap water is discoloured, running the tap for up to 20 minutes will usually restore water to a clear colour. Water is safe to drink once the water is running clear. Uisce Éireann continues to advise customers not to drink discoloured water.

We are working to restore the water supply as quickly as possible to impacted customers in the city following a significant burst to a water main.

Areas potentially impacted include South Mall, Grand Parade, Morrison’s Island, South Terrace, Parliament Bridge, Rutland Square, Douglas Street and surrounding areas.

Expert water services crews have been dispatched to carry out repair works, and every effort is being made to complete this work as quickly as possible. Given the location of the burst, the repair works are complex. The current estimated restoration time is 8.35pm today but it may take a number of hours after this for normal supply to return to all customers

As per best practice, most homes and businesses will have on-site water storage to provide a backup source of water for sanitation purposes.

Sean Lynch, Operations Lead for Uisce Éireann in Cork City said: “We understand the inconvenience that unplanned outages can have. Crews have been mobilised and we will continue to keep the community updated as the works progress."

Following repair works, it typically takes two to three hours for normal supply to fully restore to all areas as the water refills the network, especially for those on higher ground or at the end of the network.
