Nighttime restrictions necessary in South Leitrim

Overnight restrictions will be required tonight (Monday) to allow reservoir levels to recover after the impact of Storm Darragh.

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Uisce Éireann wishes to advise customers in parts of South Leitrim that it will be necessary to implement water conservation measures overnight to maintain daytime supplies. This is to allow reservoir levels to recover after the impact of Storm Darragh on supply.

Uisce Éireann is continuing to work to restore normal reservoir operating levels across the county as a result of the power failures over the weekend. Some pumping stations across the county that fill these reservoirs remain without power. Reservoir levels have been impacted by power interruptions following Storm Darragh and recurring power outages in recent days.

Overnight restrictions help us fill reservoirs and improve supply and pressure for customers.  As some reservoirs remain low, restrictions are scheduled to take place nightly from 9pm – 7am until further notice in the following areas:

  • Carrick-on-Shannon area: Hartley, Attirory
  • Drumshanbo/Leitrim Village:  Drumshanbo town, Leitrim village, Ballinaboy, Mullaghboy/Drumbrand, Lisdrumrea/Lisdrumfarna, Disternan, Drumcong
  • Mohill/Carrigallen; Ohill, Newtowngore, Kilbracken, Killyvehy, Gortletteragh, Cornageeha
  • Dromod/Drumsna: Dromod, Dromod south, Rooskey
  • Ballinamore: all mains supply from the town

Customers in these areas will experience a reduction in pressure and flow during the restrictions. Uisce Éireann is working to restore the water supply as quickly as possible to impacted customers.

Alternative water supplies are available at the following locations:

  • Drumshanbo:  Food Hub
  • Corlawallen: Drumlea N.S.
  • Aughawillin: Aughawillin N.S.
  • Drumcong: Drumcong Cemetery
  • Ballinamore: The Square
  • Killyvehy: McNamee’s Garage

Customers are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from tankers and to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure.

Kevin Love, Water Treatment Operations Manager with Uisce Éireann, said, “These restrictions are necessary in order to maintain and protect a daytime supply. We understand the inconvenience that restrictions cause and want to thank the community for their patience. Our priority is the provision of clean safe drinking water to communities.”

Following return of supply, it typically takes two to three hours for normal supply to fully be restored to all areas as the water refills the network, especially for those on higher ground or at the end of the network.

Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communications from us for planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours. The Uisce Éireann customer care helpline is open 24/7 on 1800 278 278 and customers can also contact us on X @IWCare with any queries.
