First 1,000 meters of pipeline installed for critical Clonmel Water Supply Upgrade

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section.

Uisce Éireann’s multi-million-euro investment in water infrastructure in Clonmel reached a milestone this week with the first 1,000 metres of water main installed along the R689 Fethard Road.

The project will improve the security and resilience of the water supply across the town and will result in homes and businesses in Clonmel and surrounding areas being able to enjoy a safer, more secure supply.

The works involve an upgrade to the treatment facilities at Monroe Water Treatment Plant (WTP); the installation of 15km of new water mains, as well as upgrades to the Rathronan Pump Station which will connect the Monroe supply to the Clonmel North Reservoir and Poulavanogue network.

It will address water quality risks for customers on the town’s Poulavanogue supply, allowing it to be taken off the EPA’s Remedial Action List.

The project is being carried out by Shareridge on behalf of Uisce Éireann and will take approximately 18 to 24 months to complete. Pipeline installation works are currently underway along the R689 Fethard Road with site investigations ongoing from Rathronan Cross to Giant’s Grave.

Commenting on the works, Uisce Éireann Portfolio Manager, Diane Carroll, said: “This milestone of the installation of the first 1,000 metres of a new 15km water pipeline highlights the progress that has been made on this critical project since September. The new watermain, along with the vital infrastructure upgrade, will enhance water security across the town into the future. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank road users and the community for their patience as we continue to progress the works safely and efficiently along the Fethard Road.”

The works are being carried out in phases to minimise disruption to the local community. They will advance over the next 18 months along Rathronan L-3279, Clashaniska L-3280, Northview Close, Priory Park Road, Thomas Street, Dillon Street and R688 Cashel Road. Traffic management will be in place along the affected roads with local and emergency access always maintained. Impacted stakeholders will be notified directly and we will continue to keep the local community updated as this project progresses.

Some short-term water interruptions may also be required, and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned interruptions..

The project will provide key additional strategic infrastructure to address problematic water quality and supply issues in the local community. This vital project will involve the upgrade of the Monroe Water Treatment Plant, upgrades to Rathronan Pumping Station and 15km of new strategic watermains ensuring the Monroe supply area and customers currently being supplied from Poulavanogue Water Treatment Plant will benefit from the security of supply of being connected to the Clonmel North Reservoir”.
