As Ballina prepares for a busy Christmas period, Uisce Éireann has ensured works along the main thoroughfares are complete ahead of the festive rush.
Crews are delivering a project to secure the town centre’s water supply for generations to come and in recent days completed works along Humbert Street.
Earlier this year, Uisce Éireann began the progressive task of replacing more than 1.3km of old pipes, which have been creating disruption for the local community in recent times.
The old pipework was susceptible to bursts but those unplanned outages will soon be a thing of the past.
Works along Dillon Terrace, Pearse Street, Pawn Office Lane and now Humbert Street are complete. This week, crews will move onto Walsh Street and off the main shopping streets with outstanding reinstatement works due to take place after Christmas.
Uisce Éireann’s Enda Mac Namara thanked the community in Ballina for their support since the project commenced.
“Locals are already feeling the benefits of these works firsthand with fewer bursts and have been hugely supportive of our crews on their ground. I want to thank Ballina Chamber of Commerce and the local businesses and residents who have welcomed our crews and wish everyone in the town a happy Christmas.
“We look forward to returning to Ballina after the Christmas holiday and continuing our work. This project will deliver a much more reliable water supply to the town for years to come.”
In January Farrans Construction, who are carrying out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, will begin works along Emmet Street.
The Ballina project forms part of Uisce Eireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme and will help the utility to achieve its 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The National Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018, when the leakage rate stood at 46%.
Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. Uisce Éireann is investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply.
