By identifying and repairing two major leaks on the Malahide Road in Marino, Dublin, Uisce Éireann has saved 326,000 litres of water per day. This significant leak was fixed through the Leakage Reduction Programme, conserving enough water to meet the needs of almost 2,500 people.
Uisce Éireann, working with their contractor GMC Utilities Group Ltd, carried out an extensive review of the network under the Find & Fix scheme. Find & Fix involves leak detection crews undertaking surveys using multiple technologies, including sounding equipment, to locate leaks on our water network.
Declan Healy, Leakage Reduction Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, described the find as “helping with our efforts to manage demand for treated water across the Dublin region.”
“We have had some significant leak repairs on the Malahide Road in Marino in recent days. The first leak detected was losing 260,000 litres per day, while another leak was losing approximately 66,000 litres per day. By fixing these leaks, enough water was saved to supply almost 2,500 people a day”.
Demand for treated water across the Greater Dublin Area has reached record levels this year, putting severe strain on water supplies serving communities in Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow and Meath.
Uisce Éireann has a number of initiatives underway to help manage this demand, including the Leakage Reduction Programme and other conservation measures, as well as ongoing capital upgrades to water infrastructure. The longer term solution is the development of a new water source, from the Lower Shannon, which is being progressed as part of the Water Supply Project Eastern & Midlands Region.
This project in Dublin is one example of how Uisce Éireann is working to reduce leaks every day. Fixing leaks can be complicated. We have more than 63,000km of water pipes underground in Ireland – enough to circle the earth one and a half times. Most leaks aren’t visible, resulting in precious water being lost, but we are making progress.
Members of the public can play their part in reducing demand and protecting water supplies by taking some simple steps to conserve water at home and reporting leaks. For leaks on private property, Uisce Éireann has a First Fix Free scheme which can offer a free leak investigation and repair to homeowners, where eligible. For leaks in public areas people can report them directly to Uisce Éireann at 1800 278 278. For further information visit www.water.ie/conservation/
