Crews continuing efforts restore normal supply to customers across County Roscommon following power outages

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Uisce Éireann crews around County Roscommon are continuing to work to ensure that water supply is returned to customers following widespread disruptions caused by Storm Darragh.

Following the restoration of electricity, normal water supply has returned to customers on the Arigna Regional Public Water Supply Scheme in North Roscommon and to customers on the Ballinlough/Granlahan Public Water Supply

Scheme and the Castlerea Regional Public Water Supply Scheme in West Roscommon.  All customers should now have a continuous water supply. Uisce Éireann is encouraging customers to contact our call centre if low pressure or intermittent supply is being experienced by customers on these three supplies. These possible disruptions may be caused by air pockets within the system which are difficult to identify.

Uisce Éireann’s customer care team is available to help 24/7 on 1800 278 278 and customers can also contact us on X @IWCare with any queries.

Although power has been restored at Rockingham Spring Plant, some customers on the Boyle/Ardcarne Regional Public Water Supply Scheme may still be experiencing water supply disruptions caused by continuing local power outages on the scheme. Reservoirs on this scheme are slow to replenish and customers are asked to conserve water as much as possible over the coming days. Customers should be receiving a supply albeit at a lower than normal pressure or on an intermittent basis.  Customers on this scheme are asked to contact our call centre if they are still without a water supply.  Air locks within the scheme may be hampering the restoration of individual supplies.

Meanwhile, customers on the North East Regional Public Water Supply Scheme may also be experiencing water outages and/or low pressure. Areas impacted include Elphin, Strokestown, Roosky, Scramoge, Ballyleague, Kilmore, Ballyfeeney, Termonbarry and surrounding areas.

Uisce Éireann’s Ger Greally explained: “Electrical power has not yet been restored at the water treatment plant. We are continuing to liaise with ESB Networks and the most recent update is that we will have full power restored on Friday afternoon. We are using generators as an interim measure until electricity is restored, resulting in the plant operating at reduced capacity."

“Low reservoir levels across this scheme are leading to intermittent and reduced pressures for customers. Although alternatives water supplies have been stood down,  customers particularly vulnerable customers are asked to contact our Call Centre if assistance is required and an alternative water supply will be delivered.”

Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communications from us for planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours.

Uisce Éireann has also launched a free text service, providing real-time updates for local issues. Customers can sign up with their Eircode and mobile number at the Water Service Updates page.

Previous Updates

Uisce Éireann is continuing efforts to restore normal water supply to customers across County Roscommon today.

This follows widespread service disruptions in the county caused by the impact of Storm Darragh over the weekend.

Following the restoration of electricity last night, normal supply is returning today to customers on the Arigna Regional Public Water Supply Scheme in North Roscommon and to customers on the Ballinlough/Granlahan Public Water Supply Scheme in West Roscommon.

As the network refills and supplies return throughout the day, customers served by these two schemes may experience intermittent disruption or low water pressure.

Customers on the Castlerea Regional Public Water Supply Scheme are also continuing to experience water outages and low pressure today. Electricity has been restored to the Mullaghdooey Reservoir site and the network is continuing to recharge after some difficulties were experienced in operations yesterday.

Uisce Éireann crews are also working this afternoon to locate and repair a significant leak near Enfield which when resolved will result in improved water pressure for customers in the area.

Although power has been restored at Rockingham Spring Plant, some customers on the Boyle/Ardcarne Regional Public Water Supply Scheme may still be experiencing water supply disruptions caused by continuing power outages at reservoirs on the scheme. These recurring outages overnight have resulted in reduced production and a delay in the restoration of a normal supply.

Meanwhile, customers on the North East Regional Public Water Supply Scheme may also be experiencing water outages and/or low pressure today. Areas impacted include Elphin, Strokestown, Roosky, Scramoge, Ballyleague, Kilmore, Ballyfeeney, Termonbarry and surrounding areas.

Electrical power has not yet been restored at the water treatment plant. As an interim measure, generators are in use which has resulted in the plant operating at reduced capacity. Low reservoir levels are leading to intermittent and reduced pressures across the scheme, particularly areas on the periphery of the network.

Alternative water supplies are located at:

  • Kilglass GAA grounds, Knockhall
  • St. Barry’s GAA grounds, Termonbarry
  • Elphin water tower
  • Ballyleague Church carpark

Customers are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from tankers and to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure. The supplies will remain in place until water has returned to all customers.

Uisce Éireann’s Ger Greally assured customers that Uisce Éireann is working to return the water supply to normal levels as quickly as possible.
“In the meantime, customers are urged to conserve water where possible in order to protect supply while the outages are resolved.”

Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communications from us for planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours.

As a result of high winds during Storm Darragh, a number of areas in Roscommon are experiencing power supply issues and water outages which can include no water and or low pressure this morning. The following areas and surrounds are impacted including:

  • Boyle/Ardcarne Regional Water Supply Scheme,
  • Arigna Regional Water Supply Scheme - Arigna, Ballyfarnon, Keadue and surrounding areas
  • North East Regional Water Supply Scheme
  • Ballinlough/Granlahan Public Water Supply Scheme
  • Castlerea Regional Water Supply Scheme

Ger Greally with Uisce Éireann, said “Due to the severity of the storm, Uisce Éireann had activated its emergency response processes, including deploying generators at key sites where power outages were likely. Uisce Éireann crews are now on the ground assessing the full impact and working to restore supply as quickly as possible. We are also working closely with the ESB to return power to key water services sites as quickly as possible. Although electrical power has been restored on Granlahan and Castlerea, it will take time for the network to fill and for water supplies to be fully restored.

In the event of a loss of supply, most properties should have adequate storage in their attic tanks for hygiene purposes for at least 24 hours. There are some simple steps people can take to conserve their water, such as avoiding the use of water-intensive appliances during this time.
