Burtonport, a village famed for its vibrant Harbour and its spectacular seaside views, will benefit from vital infrastructure delivered by Uisce Éireann, which will enhance the local community, environment and support economic development for decades to come.

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Donegal County Council, is delighted to announce the completion of a €7 million new state of the art wastewater treatment plant in Burtonport.
Uisce Éireann has continued to prioritise the elimination of raw sewage from the coast of Donegal and this year has seen another significant leap forward with the completion of a new wastewater treatment plant in Burtonport, improving the lives of locals and visitors alike.

Speaking about the significant investment, Patrick Greene, Wastewater Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said:
"We are proud to have delivered this important project for the local community in Burtonport. This upgraded infrastructure has eliminated the discharge of raw sewage into Rutland Sound and will improve water quality in bathing waters in the area."

Patrick added: "I would like to thank all our stakeholders including local residents, elected representatives, and the media for their support while we worked to complete this crucial project for the people of Burtonport. The area is renowned for its water-based activities such as swimming, fishing to name a few, and its tourism sector. This significant investment will boost the area by enhancing the local environment, protecting health and improve water quality on the bathing waters. It will also ensure that the wastewater infrastructure has capacity to meet future development needs in the area."

The completion of this critical infrastructure will ensure compliance with national and EU regulatory standards relating to the treatment of urban wastewater.

Burtonport is among 34 towns and villages around the country benefiting today from cleaner waters and enhanced amenities due to the construction of new treatment plants where none existed previously. The Burtonport project follows the successful completion of new wastewater infrastructure investment in Kilcar and Kerrykeel, Co. Donegal which were complete late last year.

Veolia delivered the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Uisce Éireann is responsible for the delivery of all public water and wastewater services in Ireland. We are committed to continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support the growth needed in housing and across our economy, while protecting the environment and safeguarding water supplies.
