Communities across Wexford Town urged to continue efforts to conserve water to help reservoir levels recover

Conservation efforts needed over the weekend to help Newtown and Coolcots reservoirs to fully replenish

Uisce Éireann is urging communities across Wexford Town to continue with their efforts to conserve water over the weekend, to protect supply, and to enable Newtown and Coolcots reservoirs to fully replenish, following a prolonged outage due to a burst trunk main.

High usage can lead to pressure reductions which can impact the supply to customers. Uisce Éireann and Wexford County Council are thankful to communities and residents across Wexford Town for their conservation efforts to protect this precious resource.

Speaking about conserving water over the weekend, Jim Fitzgerald, Regional Operations Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: "We are appealing to customers in Wexford Town to conserve water to give the reservoirs time to replenish. Any reduction that customers can make in their usage can collectively result in significant supply improvements for all customers."

Jim added "We would like to thank the affected communities for their patience. It's important that we all consider our water usage and look at simple yet impactful ways to conserve water. It can sometimes be difficult to know where to start, but even small changes can make a significant difference."

For more simple ways to conserve water check out the Uisce Éireann Conservation Calculator which can help people work out how much water they are currently using and how they can conserve even more.

Uisce Éireann will continue to monitor the levels at Newtown and Coolcots reservoirs over the coming weeks and take any actions that may be necessary to maintain supplies, including communicating about localised issues as they arise.

Previous Updates

Customers thanked for their patience and co-operation as crews worked through the night on repairs.

Uisce Éireann crews have successfully completed repairs to a pump which has caused reservoir levels to deplete to unsafe levels resulting in low pressure and outages to customers in the following areas of Wexford Town: Barntown, Townparks, Whitemill, Ard Carman, Coolcots and surrounding areas.

Dedicated crews continue with repairs to a complex burst water main and have reconfigured the network where possible to ensure the water supply is restored to all impacted customers, especially those at the end of the network or on high ground.

Crews are also working hard to replenish reservoir levels and Uisce Éireann is urgently aappealing to customers to conserve water where possible to prevent pressure on the local supply and ensure normal pressure and supply can be fully restored to all. While handwashing remains a priority, simple water conservation efforts can have a big impact on reducing demand. Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth and shaving can save up to 6 litres of water per minute. Taking a shower instead of a bath or using a watering can rather than a hose when gardening can also make a big difference in water use.
