Uisce Éireann delivering more reliable water supply for Donegal

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section.

Uisce Éireann's investment in County Donegal is continuing with work commencing this week in Carnatreantagh to provide a more reliable water supply to the community and reduce high levels of leakage.

Uisce Éireann has prioritised more than 2km of water mains for replacement which will ensure a reduction in disruption from bursts and supply interruptions for customers.

The section of works will take place along a section of the Trentagh Road L-1522-1/2. This significant project for the people of Carnatreantagh will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers' property boundaries and connecting it to the customers' water supply. These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme.

Programme Manager for Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme, Patricia Lowry, is thrilled for this important project to begin.

"This essential work is part of a significant investment by Uisce Éireann to improve the water network across the country, prioritising investment where it is needed most enabling these communities to thrive.

To deliver the works safely and efficiently, a road closure will be in place along a section of the L-1522-1/2 until October. Diversion routes will be in place and the community can be assured that local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.

Patricia continued: "We understand that this type of work is inconvenient, and our crews are making make every effort to minimise disruption to the local community. These works are vital to ensure Carnatreantagh's security of supply now and into the future, with the long-term benefits far outweighing any short-term inconvenience. We thank the community for their patience and co-operation as these essential works progress".

Farrans Construction are carrying out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann which are expected to be completed by late Autumn 2024.

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann is working in partnership with Donegal County Council to reduce leaks every day. Fixing leaks can be complicated. We have over 63,000 km of water pipes underground in Ireland - enough to circle the earth one and a half times. Most leaks aren't visible, resulting in precious water being lost but we are making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2022 it was 37%. We are on track to achieve a national leakage rate of 25% by the end of 2030.

The works may require some short-term water interruptions, but the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned interruptions.

The Uisce Éireann customer care helpline is open 24/7 on 1800 278 278 and customers can also contact us on X @IWCare with any queries.
