Survey on pesticide use
At the beginning of the project, we conducted a pesticide usage survey within the Larah catchment. Thirty farms were randomly selected to take part in the voluntary survey. The goal of the survey was to understand pesticide usage within the catchment and how this might be affecting the downstream water source. Understanding how pesticides were being used in the area helped us develop our project plan.
Survey participants seemed to want to improve and protect water quality in their area. While they had a general understanding of how to use pesticides safely, they weren't aware of how severely pesticide use can affect water sources. By providing them with the correct guidance and support, we can help them make a positive impact on our water sources.
The survey responses indicated areas of the project that we could focus on to make the most impact. These include:
- training and education on the subject matter
- promotion of integrated pest control practices
- diligence around pesticide storage, handling and application
