Roscommon Main Drainage Scheme
Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Roscommon County Council, has completed €20 million upgrades to the Roscommon Main Drainage Scheme. This project represents a further step in the continued delivery of improvements to the wastewater network in Roscommon.
The original sewer network was overloaded with inadequate capacity to cater for the existing and future flows. This investment will now benefit homes and businesses in Roscommon Town and the surrounding area. Tobin Consulting Engineers and GMC Utilities Group carried out the sewer network upgrades on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
The completed project will now reduce the risk of sewer flooding in Roscommon Town and will also eliminate non-compliant sewer overflows which will improve water quality in the River Jiggy. It also provides the additional capacity in the sewer network which will provide for current and future population growth in the Town.
What was involved as part of this project?
- Installed of 7.2km of new higher capacity sewers and rising mains,
- Upgraded six existing storm water overflows and decommissioned a further six,
- Constructed a new inlet pumping station, balancing tank and storm water holding tank at the existing Wastewater Treatment Plant,
- Upgraded pumping stations with stormwater storage at Circular Rd, Castlerea Rd, Ardsallagh, Ballinagard.
What are the benefits of this project?
As part of this €20 million project, Uisce Éireann has:
- Reduced the risk of sewers flooding,
- Enhanced the water quality in the Jiggy and Hind rivers,
- Improved sewer capacity to facilitate economic development,
- Enabled the long-term social and economic development of Roscommon Town
- Ensures compliance with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.
