Loughrea Town Water Mains Replacement

Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Galway County Council, is replacing ageing, problematic water mains in Loughrea Town, Co. Galway to provide a safer and more secure water supply, improve water quality and reduce high levels of leakage.

The works involve the replacement of 1.8km of aged problematic water mains with new modern pipes. The project to replace the water mains in Loughrea Town, Co.Galway commenced in early July 2023. These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme.

The section of works will take place at Castle Street, Church Street, King Street, Kelly Street, Piggott Street, Moore Street, Dolphin Street, Mount Carmel Crescent, Athenry Road, Liam Mellows Terrace, Cross Street and St. Brendan's Day Care Centre.

The works will improve the water network in Loughrea Town with a view to lifting the Boil Water Notice affecting customers in the area as the works progress.

The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers' property boundaries and connecting it to the customers' water supply. Where the existing service connections on the public side are lead these will be replaced as part of this improvement work.

The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans Construction and are expected to be completed by Summer 2024.

What are the benefits of the works?

The benefits of the leakage reduction works include:

  • A Reliable Water Supply - Replacement of water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
  • Reduced Leaks - Replacement of water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
  • Improved Water Quality - Removing existing old cast iron and lead from the public water network and replacing them with new pipes will reduce the risk of contamination.
  • Improved Operation and Maintenance - These works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.

Will customers be affected by the works?

Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management will be in place to allow the works to be delivered safely and efficiently. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.

The works may involve some short-term water interruptions and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned water interruptions.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
