Lismore Wastewater Network Upgrade Project

Uisce Éireann upgraded the underground wastewater infrastructure at Lismore to provide a more reliable network and prevent sewer flooding.

The works involved carrying out necessary upgrades to the existing wastewater network and construction of a new surface water outfall pipe. The upgrades will alleviate spillages of sewage during periods of heavy rainfall onto the N72 and at a problematic manhole located on the St. Declan’s walkway route.

Works were carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s Wastewater Below Ground Programme and commenced in April 2025.

Sections of works took place along the N72; Commenced at St Declan's Walkway, Lismore to Aglish (Lady Louisa Walk) entrance from the N72, opposite the Lismore House Hotel, Lismore Gardens carpark and Ferry Lane Junction.

Following the identification of areas requiring further upgrades, a second phase commenced and concluded at the end of September, which included the installation of 205 metres of new storm sewer, the replacement of two manholes, and the connection of several storm gulleys into the new storm sewer.

The works were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Shareridge and were completed by end of May 2025.

What are the benefits of the works?

  • Upgrading the wastewater network – This project will upgrade the wastewater network, delivering reliable, sustainable high-quality wastewater services.
  • Improving the wastewater infrastructure – This project will help safeguard the environment by reducing the risk of wastewater overflows.

To minimise disruption a phased approach with areas of works limited to short sections will be adopted for delivery of this project. The phases to facilitate works will be as follows:

Phase 1St. Declan’s way, Lismore to Aglish. The Lady Louisa Walk entrance from the N72
Phase 2N72, Opposite Lismore House Hotel
Phase 3N72, (Public Car Park entrance)
Phase 4Ferry Lane
Phase 5N72 North of Ferry Lane Junction (Opposite fountain)

Will the community be affected by the works?

There will be a requirement to close a section of St Declan's Walkway, Lismore to Aglish (Lady Louisa Walk) at the N72 entrance from Friday, 18th April – Monday, 12th May.

Traffic management in the form of Stop/Go will be in place along the N72 Road during this time to allow the works to be delivered safely and efficiently.

Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management may be in place during this time. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.
