Letterkenny Water Supply Zone
Uisce Éireann are progressing design works to increase the water supply into Letterkenny.
Uisce Éireann is advancing the design and planning works for the Letterkenny Water Supply Zone. The project which will benefit over 29,000 people, will ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply for Letterkenny and surrounding areas, as well as allowing for future growth and development.
Why is this project needed?
Currently, the Letterkenny water supply infrastructure has limited capacity, the Inishowen to Burnfoot interconnector has deficient network infrastructure and undersized trunk water mains, which has led to frequent outages for the Inishowen/Letterkenny supply. This project will implement strategic storage and network upgrades, including the construction of two new reservoirs, to support the economic and social development of Letterkenny and its surrounding areas.
The main issues with the network are:
- Lack of available water supply to match increased growth in the region
- Insufficient capacity of the pipelines and storage within the water network around Letterkenny and surrounding areas
What is involved in this project?
This major investment to upgrade the Letterkenny Water Supply will involve:
- Upgrade and Expansion of the treatment facilities at Illies WTP.
- Construction of new reservoirs at Burt,Lurgybrack and Knocknamona.
- Installation of 36 km of trunk water main from Buncrana to Letterkenny.
- Upgrade to the Buhullion and Lurgybrack Pumping Stations.
What are the benefits of this project?
Once complete, this project will:
- Enhance the security and resilience of water supply for homes and businesses in the Inishowen and Letterkenny areas.
- Improve the quality and reliability of the water supply area in Inishowen, Letterkenny and surrounding areas.
- Enhance local amenities and provide a platform for social and economic development
Will customers be affected by the works?
Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. To deliver the works safely and efficiently, traffic management will be required. When further information is available in this regard it will be shared with local stakeholders and the community. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.
We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
What are the next steps?
Site investigation works will commence in Spring 2025 and are expected to continue up to Sumer 2025.
