Terryland Raw Water Intake Project
Uisce Éireann has completed construction of a critical new intake structure on the River Corrib which will ensure a reliable, safe and secure source of drinking water supply for Galway City and surrounding areas.
Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Galway County Council, has completed works on the Terryland Raw Water Intake project to safeguard the water supply to homes and businesses across Galway City and surrounding areas in the county.
This €14 million investment included construction of the new intake structure along the River Corrib and has now reached completion. This milestone will ensure a reliable and safe supply of drinking water. The newly upgraded intake structure will help to prevent potential water shortages, reducing the risk of disruption to water supply for residents and businesses supplied by the plant in Galway City and surrounding areas.

What are the benefits of these works?
- Water supply can be maintained to residents and businesses supplied by this plant during prolonged dry periods.
- Screening will be provided to improve and protect the quality of raw water coming into the plant.
- The fish population of the River Corrib will be protected.
What was involved as part of this project?
This €14 million Terryland Project involved moving the abstraction for Terryland Water Treatment Plant from the Terryland River to the River Corrib, providing a more reliable source of water into the plant.
The works constructed included:
- A new intake structure including instrumentation and a fish deterrent and return system.
- New pipeline constructed under the N6 using a tunnel boring machine.
- Second pipeline constructed using an open cut excavation including a crossing of the Terryland River to the old intake.
- New connection chamber to tie in the new pipeline to Terryland Water Treatment Plant.
