Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Donegal County Council, has invested €12 million in the replacement and rehabilitation of approximately 40 kilometres of old water mains across the county.

The Donegal Countywide Watermain Rehabilitation Project is nearing completion. Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Donegal County Council, has replaced and rehabilitated approximately 40 kilometres of old water mains across multiple sites in County Donegal to improve water supply and tackle the high levels of leakage.

Benefits

Improved water quality

  • Removal of old cast iron from the public water network and replaced them with new plastic pipes which will reduce the risk of contamination.

A reliable water supply

  • Replaced the ageing water mains and service connections to reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.

Reduced leaks

  • Replaced the old water mains and service connections which will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of water lost to leakage.

Improved operation and maintenance

  • These works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.

What was involved?

Carlin, Kerrykeel

  • Installation of 2.4km water main, transfer of service connections, road reinstatement and the decommissioning of the old water main.

Doaghmore, Fanad

  • Installation of 3.6km water main, transfer of service connections, road reinstatement and decommissioning of the old water main.

Meenaleck to Rannafast

  • Installation of 3.3km water main, transfer of service connections, road reinstatement and decommissioning of the old water main.

Sheskinbeg

  • Installation of 1.4km water main, transfer of service connections, road reinstatement and decommissioning of the old water main.

Argery, Ballindrait & Lifford

  • Installation of 2.5km water main, transfer of service connections, road reinstatement and decommissioning of the old water main.

Derrybeg to Brinnalack

  • Installation of 5km water main, transfer of service connections, road reinstatement and decommissioning of the old water main.

Abbeylands, Ballyshannon

  • Installation of 1.2km water main, transfer of service connections, temporary road reinstatement and decommissioning of the old water main.

Ballybofey South Backline (Cross Roads, Killygordon to Carrickmagrath, Ballybofey)

  • Installation of 9km water main, transfer of service connections, temporary road reinstatement and decommissioning of the old water main.

Corker, Rossnowlagh

  • Installation of 4.1km water main, transfer of service connections, temporary road reinstatement and decommissioning of the old water main.

Ballyshannon Town

  • Installation of new water mains at Cluain Barron, St Benildus Avenue and Erne Street. New service connections were installed at Erne Street and St Benildus Avenue.

Three Trees, Inishowen

  • Installation of 3.5km water main, transfer of service connections, temporary road reinstatement and decommissioning of the old water main.

Quigley's Point and Cabry

  • Installation of 1.5km water main began on L-1951-1 at Quigley's Point and R238 at Cabry.

Bundoran, West End

  • Installation of 1.4km water main on R-267 at Bundoran West End.
