Clonmel Water Supply Upgrade Project
Uisce Éireann is progressing works to improve the security and resilience of the water supply in Clonmel, Co Tipperary.
The project represents a multi-million-euro investment in water infrastructure and will result in homes and businesses in Clonmel and surrounding areas being able to enjoy a safer, more secure water supply. Shareridge is delivering this project on Uisce Éireann’s behalf.
What are the benefits of this project?
Once complete, this project will:
- Enhance the security and resilience of water supply for homes and businesses in the area.
- Improve the quality and reliability of the water supply area of Clonmel.
- Address ongoing operational issues that result in interruptions to the water supply and Boil Water Notices.
- Allow for Clonmel’s Poulavanogue water supply to be removed from the EPA’s Remedial Action List, which identifies “at-risk” drinking water supplies.
What is involved in this project?
This major investment to upgrade the Clonmel Water Supply will involve:
- An upgrade to the treatment facilities at Monroe Water Treatment Plant (WTP)
- The installation of 15km of new water mains
- Upgrades to Rahronan pumping station which will connect the Monroe supply to the Clonmel North Reservoir and Poulavanogue network.
The project will also provide for a more secure water supply to those currently supplied by the existing Monroe WTP from the large Clonmel North Reservoir.
Once the Monroe WTP upgrade works are complete, customers who were supplied from Poulavanogue WTP will now be supplied from Monroe WTP.

What is happening next?
The project is being carried out by Shareridge on behalf of Uisce Éireann and will take approximately 18 to 24 months to complete. Since the project commenced in September 2024, over 1,000 metres of water main has been installed along the R689 Fethard Road. Works will continue in this area over the coming weeks with site investigations ongoing from Rathronan Cross to Giant’s Grave.
The works are being carried out in phases to minimise disruption to the local community. They will advance over the next 18 months along Rathronan L-3279, Clashaniska L-3280, Northview Close, Priory Park Road, Thomas Street, Dillon Street and R688 Cashel Road.
To deliver the works safely and efficiently, traffic management will be required. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained. Impacted stakeholders will be notified directly and we endeavour to keep the local community updated as this project progresses. The works may involve some short-term water interruptions and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.
We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
