Uisce Éireann has commenced upgrade works to the Cahir Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Tipperary County Council, has commenced upgrade works on the Cahir Wastewater Treatment Plant. Murphy Process Engineering, Ireland are delivering the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

What is involved with this project?

The Cahir Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade project includes:

  • Increasing the capacity of the Wastewater Treatment Plant from a Population Equivalent (PE) of 5,000 to 5,500 (10-year forecast for all mechanical and electrical installations) and 6,000 (25 year forecast for all civil and structural installations).
  • Works comprise new inlet screen works, 2 no. new storm water overflow (SWO) chambers, new splitter chambers, a new final settling tank and additional ancillary works.
  • The upgraded plant will discharge treated effluent into the River Suir to the Wastewater Discharge Licence (WWDL) and Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD) standards.

What are the benefits of this project?

The upgraded wastewater treatment plant will:

  • Provide better health and integrity to the environment
  • Improve the water quality in the River Suir
  • Facilitate growth and development in the area
  • Ensure compliance with national and EU regulations relating to the treatment of wastewater

Next Steps

The works have been instructed to Murphy Process Engineering Ltd (MPE). The value of the works is €3 million (ex. VAT). The works commenced on site in August 2023 and are expected to be completed by late 2024.
