Ballycastle Water Supply Scheme

Uisce Éireann has upgraded the drinking water supply for the Ballycastle area in Mayo.

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Mayo County Council, has completed upgrade works to the Ballycastle Water Supply Scheme. This project has benefitted over 360 customers in the Ballycastle area to ensure the delivery of a clean, safe drinking water source and facilitated the removal of the area off the EPA's Remedial Action List (RAL).

The project consisted of the installation of 6km of pipeline in order to connect the Ballycastle water supply scheme to the Ballina Regional Water Supply Scheme. This project has improved the drinking water quality for Ballycastle and surrounding area. The works were carried out by Source Civil Limited on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

What is involved as part of this project?

As part of this project, Uisce Éireann:

  • Connected the Ballycastle Water Supply with the adjacent Ballina Regional Water Supply Scheme network approximately 6km away through the existing Lacken Reservoir
  • Installed two new booster stations
  • Decommissioned the existing water treatment plant and reservoir at the Ballyknock source
