Why are we upgrading the Water Treatment Plant?

The filtration process is a critical element of water treatment. It ensures the removal of harmful bacteria and supports to maintain the continued supply of safe drinking water. Elements of this process are nearing the end of their design life at Adamstown WTP. As a result, Uisce Éireann will carry out upgrades across the entire process to ensure we continue to produce quality drinking water. Alongside these upgrades we are going to upgrade our wash water facilities and automation processes on site to allow us to ensure we continue to protect the wider Kilmeaden environment and supply a more sustainable water supply.

What is proposed as part of this project?

This project involves the following works:

  • Upgrade and repair of aged sand filters including individual filter media, controls and automation of processes.
  • Construct new wash water management facility.
  • Construct new clear water tank with adequate capacity for filter backwash including all ancillary equipment.
  • Upgrade the monitoring and instrumentation systems.
  • Upgrading the plant control, telemetry and automation.

What are the benefits of this project?

  • Providing a safer and more reliable water supply for approx. 65,000 customers.
  • Ensuring a more resilient water supply and improving drinking water quality.
  • Ensuring compliance with current National and EU drinking water regulations.
  • Ensuring current capacity demand is met.
  • Driving energy efficiency using new technology and automation to provide a more sustainable water supply.

What are the next steps?
