Works to drive down leakage and improve water supply in Gorey
Securing the water supply in Wexford remains a top priority for Uisce Éireann as works to drive down leakage and improve the water supply to homes and businesses in Gorey has got underway. The project is being delivered as part of Uisce Éireann's national Leakage Reduction Programme which is delivering significant benefits to local communities across Ireland, including improved water quality, a more secure water supply, and reducing the amount of water lost through leakage.
Working in partnership with Wexford County Council, Uisce Éireann is replacing over 700 meters of problematic watermains in St. Waleran's, Gorey, representing a significant step in providing a more reliable water supply to homes and businesses in the area.
The works, which are being carried out by Shareridge Utilities Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann, will take place along the Ballytegan Road, just south of the entrance to St. Waleran's House, and will continue through the St. Waleran's development site with an expected completion date of January 2023.
To facilitate the safe delivery of these works some traffic management may be in place throughout the duration of the project but local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times. The areas of work will be limited to short sections in order to minimise any impact on the local community.
Highlighting the importance of this upgrade for the local community, Joe Carroll, Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead at Uisce Éireann, said, "We are delighted to be making significant progress with essential upgrades to the water supply in Gorey. Not only will these improvements help to reduce the amount of water lost through leakage, but will also ensure a safe and reliable water supply for the new housing developments planned for the area. During this project there may be some short-term water outages and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned water outages."
Joe added, Uisce Éireann would like to thank the local community in St.Waleran's, Gorey, in advance for their patience and cooperation while we complete these essential upgrade works which will future-proof the water supply for the area."
The works are being delivered as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme which will deliver significant benefits to the local community including a more secure water supply and considerable water savings. The programme adopts a strategic and targeted approach to improving the water network across Ireland, through the delivery of several leakage reduction work streams, prioritising investment where it is needed most, and providing proactive solutions to local water supply issues.
Fixing leaks can be complicated but we are making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2021 it was reduced to 38%. We are on track to achieve a national leakage rate of 25% by the end of 2030. For more information, please visit our National Leakage Reduction Programme page.
