Works advancing to drive down leakage in Trim
This essential project has now passed the half-way stage
Securing the water supply in Trim remains a top priority for Uisce Éireann as the intensive campaign continues to drive down leakage across the town and improve the water supply to homes and businesses.
Working in partnership with Meath County Council, Uisce Éireann advises that works to replace the water mains along the Dublin Road area of Trim are progressing well and are due to be completed in November. Approximately 1.7 km of old and problematic pipes will be replaced, representing a significant step and investment in reducing disruption from bursts and outages which have been affecting homes and businesses in Trim. This essential project has now passed the half-way stage.
The works are being delivered as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme which will deliver significant benefits to the local community including a more secure water supply and considerable water savings. The programme adopts a strategic and targeted approach to improving the water network across Ireland, through the delivery of a number of leakage reduction work streams, prioritising investment where it is needed most, and providing proactive solutions to local water supply issues.
Highlighting the importance of this upgrade, Matt Thomson, Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead at Uisce Éireann, said, "We are delighted to be making significant progress with this essential upgrade for Trim with the completion of these works now on the horizon. The complexity of these works in urban areas and the nature of the underground network while posing challenges at times, has been overcome and we are looking forward to completing this essential project for the people of Trim."
The works will not only reduce the amount of drinking water lost to leakage, but it will also deliver a much more reliable supply for generations to come.
Matt added, "On behalf of Uisce Éireann, I would like to thank the local community in Trim for their on-going patience and cooperation. Based on previous experiences, we know that the short-term inconvenience will be overshadowed by the long-term benefits."
Fixing leaks can be complicated but we are making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2021 it was reduced to 38%. We are on track to achieve a national leakage rate of 25% by the end of 2030. For more information, please visit our Leakage Reduction Programme page.
