Supply restored for customers on Greenmount Public Water Supply in County Louth
Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section.
Uisce Éireann can confirm that water supply has been restored to customers in the Greenmount, Castlebellingham, Kilsaran, Anagassan and Dunleer areas.
Some customers may be experiencing low pressure at their taps. It can take a number of hours for normal supply to fully restore to all areas as the water refills the network, especially for those on higher ground or at the end of the network.
Stephen Burke, Uisce Éireann, thanked customers for their patience: "We understand how disruptive unplanned outages are and we would like to thank impacted customers for their patience whilst our teams worked to restore the water supply."
Stephen added: "Poor water quality in the Dee River, with elevated levels of ammonia caused production at the treatment plant to be temporarily suspended last week. Uisce Éireann is continuing to work closely with Louth County Council to identify the source of contamination in the river, which can be as a result of uncontrolled discharge or run-off from a number of sources including on occasion from agricultural or industrial use. We would ask any such businesses in the vicinity or catchment area of the Dee river to check their property to see if there could be any such discharge occurring."
The Uisce Éireann customer care helpline is open 24/7 on 1800 278 278 and customers can also contact us on X (formerly Twitter) @IWCare with any queries. Local information about Water Service and Supply issues is available on our website.

Alternative water supplies will remain in place over the weekend
Uisce Éireann is working to restore water supply for customers on the Greenmount Water Supply in County Louth, following a shutdown of the Water Treatment Plant yesterday. Poor water quality in the Dee River, with elevated levels of ammonia caused production at the treatment plant to be temporarily suspended. Uisce Éireann is continuing to work closely with Louth County Council to identify the source of contamination in the river. Ammonia can sometimes arise in water-courses as a result of uncontrolled discharge/run-off from a number of sources including on occasion from agricultural or industrial use. We would ask any such businesses in the vicinity/catchment of the Dee river to check their property to see if there could be any such discharge occurring.
Remedial measures have been implemented and the water treatment plant is back in production; however, it may take 24 to 48 hours for the reservoirs to fully replenish and for normal drinking water supply to return for impacted customers in the Greenmount Castlebellingham, Kilsaran, Anagassan and Dunleer areas.
Speaking about the works, Stephen Burke, Uisce Éireann commented: "Remedial actions were taken as quickly as possible to minimise disruption to the community. The reservoir levels are now beginning to recover; however, water tankers will remain in place over the weekend until normal supply returns to the network. Uisce Éireann thanks impacted customers for their patience and we will issue a further update on Monday."
As supply returns to impacted customers, some customers may detect a taste from their drinking water. We would like to reassure customers that the water is safe to drink. Customers with queries or concerns about the quality of their drinking water should contact the Uisce Éireann customer care helpline, open 24/7 on 1800 278 278 or via X (formerly Twitter) @IWCare.

Uisce Éireann is working to restore water supply for customers on the Greenmount Water Supply in County Louth, following a shutdown of the Water Treatment Plant today. Poor water quality in the Dee River, with elevated levels of ammonia has meant that production at the Treatment Plant has had to be temporarily suspended. This will likely cause the volume of treated water storage in the network to fall below sustainable levels. Uisce Éireann is working closely with Louth County Council to identify the source of contamination in the river.
River water quality at the inlet to the treatment plant is being closely monitored by Uisce Éireann and every effort is being made to bring the plant back into production and increase reservoir storage levels. If levels remain critically low, customers in the Greenmount Castlebellingham, Kilsaran, Anagassan and Dunleer areas are likely to experience outages.
Speaking about the works, Stephen Burke, Uisce Éireann commented: "We are working as quickly and efficiently as possible to restore production and avoid disruption to customers. An incident team has been set up and we are in the process of mobilising water tankers. Uisce Éireann thanks customers in advance for their patience and we will issue a further update once available. It is our priority to return supply as soon as possible."
