Crews to re-commence works to complete Bandon Water Main & Sewer Network Upgrade

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Cork County Council, will soon re-commence one of two sections outstanding as part of the €21 million project in Bandon that involves the replacement of defective water mains, pressure management works, and capacity improvement works in the drinking water network. The project also addresses the wastewater network, with an increase in the capacity of the sewerage system to cater for future growth and development, and a reduction in overflows to the Bandon and Bridewell Rivers.

The project was substantially completed in 2021, however a small part of the sewer network upgrade works was deferred due to structural concerns over carrying out deep excavation works close to buildings on Market Quay and on Oliver Plunkett Street. While we are currently assessing a design for an alternative solution for Oliver Plunkett Street, a new design has been agreed to replace the initial proposed works on Market Quay with a new route at Patricks Quay.

Speaking about the next stage of the project, Eunan Canavan from Uisce Éireann said,

"Uisce Éireann would like to thank the residents and businesses in Bandon for their patience over the last few years as we have delivered this  vital project. The project was challenging but will provide a safer and more reliable water supply for the people of Bandon. It will also enhance the water quality of the River Bandon and alleviate sewer flooding.  The project will  ensure that there is capacity for Bandon to continue to grow and thrive as the gateway to West Cork."

The works, being carried out on the Patrick's Quay section by Ward and Burke Construction Ltd, will now re-commence with traffic management for approximately two months as follows:

Section 1: Road closure at Bridge Lane from 15 August to 30 August 2022.

Section 2: Road closure at St. Patricks Quay (between Pearse Street & Bridge Lane) from 31 August to 12 September 2022. The seating/pedestrian area is to be removed from Bridge Lane and reopened for traffic during the closure of St. Patrick's Quay.

Section 3: Road closure at St. Patricks Quay (between Bridge Lane & St. Patricks Place) from 13 September to 10 October 2022. Local access will be maintained to adjacent carpark if necessary. The seating/pedestrian area to be removed from Bridge Lane and reopened for traffic during closure of St. Patrick's Quay.

The Bandon Water Main and Sewer Network Upgrade works completed include:

  • Replacement of 10km of aging water mains with a high frequency of burst and high rate of leakage, including 3.6km of new trunk mains.
  • Upgrading over 5km of sewer network;
  • Removal of 11 combined sewer overflows.
  • Increased water and sewer network capacity allowing for growth and economic development in Bandon.
