Out with the old and in with the new for Roscommon villages
Homes in two Roscommon villages can enjoy a more dependable water supply this winter, safe in the knowledge that Uisce Éireann has upgraded the water mains in their localities.
The replacement of old pipework in Lisnamult, on the outskirts of Roscommon Town, and between Cremully and Aghagad will mean fewer outages and bursts for both communities.
While locals will be relieved to hear the 1.5km of new pipes between Cremully and Aghagad has reduced the risk of supply disruptions, Lisnamult's half a kilometre of new water main, which replaces long service connections, is also welcome news as it's rid the area of water pressure problems.
Both of these projects formed part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme, which aims to improve the reliability of supply and save the precious resource.
Uisce Éireann's Networks Regional Lead Declan Cawley explained that his team is working with Roscommon County Council to prioritise leakage reduction in the areas that need it most.
"We were aware of the pressure issues for our customers in the Lisnamult area, but the new pipework has resolved that. Meanwhile, the project in Cremully means locals there are not inconvenienced by regular bursts. These works have reduced the amount of treated water being lost underground, safeguarding the area's water supply for the future."
Both projects will help Uisce Éireann achieve its 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The National Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018 when the leakage rate stood at 46%. At the end of last year, it had reduced to 38%.
Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. We are investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply.
