Matt Cooper interviews Uisce Éireann CEO Niall Gleeson
Uisce Éireann's CEO Niall Gleeson recently sat down with journalist and broadcaster Matt Cooper to discuss the exciting next phase in our journey as Ireland's standalone public water authority.
In the interview, Niall outlined the ambitious programme of work being carried out by Uisce Éireann, investing over €1 billion a year in modernising and future-proofing Ireland's water and wastewater infrastructure.
"Uisce Éireann will deliver for communities around the country and allow those communities to thrive - that's our main aim," Niall explained.
"This is an incredibly exciting time for us as we look forward to bringing existing staff together with our colleagues in the Local Authorities water services as a single national organisation dedicated to delivering for the people of Ireland."
He added: "We have three main areas of focus: providing safe drinking water, respecting and enhancing the environment, and supporting growth and development right across the country."
Niall cited projects such as the Ringsend Wastewater Plant upgrade, the Greater Dublin Drainage Project, the Leakage Reduction Programme and the Water Supply Project as examples of the critical infrastructure that Uisce Eireann is developing in order to meet current and future needs of communities. And, at the heart of the organisation's vision is to make UE an 'exemplar' for sustainability.
"We are taking a really long term view, looking at where growth is going to be and how we can support that growth.
"We have already made great strides in tackling leakage, ending raw sewage discharges, and delivering clean drinking water. There is lots more to do but we are confident we have the people, structures and funding in place to deliver for all the people of Ireland."
