Previous Updates

Due to deterioration in raw water quality, the treatment process has been compromised for the supply

Following consultation with the Health Service Executive, Uisce Éireann and Galway County Council have issued a Boil Water Notice to protect the health of approximately 2,294 customers supplied by the Carna Kilkieran Regional Public Water Supply Scheme. Due to deterioration in raw water quality, the treatment process has been compromised. This has resulted in elevated levels of turbidity and reduced chlorine residuals in the treated water supply.

Areas impacted include all customers on the Carna Kilkieran Regional Public Water Supply Scheme including customers in Roundstone.

All consumers affected by this notice must boil their water before drinking. Uisce Éireann's primary focus is and always will be the protection of public health. Drinking water experts from Uisce Éireann and Galway County Council are working, in consultation with the HSE, to lift the notice as quickly and as safely as possible. In the meantime, all customers on this supply are advised to boil and cool their water before use until further notice.

Uisce Eireann's Eoin Hughes acknowledged the impact of this notice on the community.

"Public health is Uisce Éireann's number one priority, and we are working closely with Galway County Council to restore drinking water quality for all impacted customers and to lift the Boil Water Notice as quickly as it is safe to do so, and in consultation with the HSE."

Uisce Éireann's drinking water standards, as per EU Drinking Water regulations, are strict and include wide safety margins. Where risks to water quality are identified through Uisce Éireann's enhanced testing and monitoring programme, the Health Service Executive (HSE) is consulted, and Boil Water Notices are issued to protect public health. In all instances immediate action is taken to address the cause of the issue to enable the lifting of the notice as quickly as it safe to do so, in agreement with the HSE.

Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communication on Boil Water Notices. Customers are reminded that the water is safe to consume once boiled.

Water must be boiled for:

  • Drinking;
  • Drinks made with water;
  • Preparation of salads and similar foods, which are not cooked prior to eating;
  • Brushing of teeth;
  • Making of ice - discard ice cubes in fridges and freezers and filtered water in fridges. Make ice from cooled boiled water.

What actions should be taken:

  • Use water prepared for drinking when preparing foods that will not be cooked (e.g. washing salads);
  • Water can be used for personal hygiene, bathing and flushing of toilets but not for brushing teeth or gargling;
  • Boil water by bringing to a vigorous, rolling boil (e.g. with an automatic kettle) and allow to cool. Cover and store in a refrigerator or cold place. Water from the hot tap is not safe to drink. Domestic water filters will not render water safe to drink;
  • Caution should be taken when bathing children to ensure that they do not swallow the bathing water;
  • Preparing Infant Formula: Where a Boil Water Notice is in place, you can prepare infant formula from tap water that has been boiled once (rolling boil for 1 minute) and cooled beforehand. Bottled water can also be used to make up infant formula. All bottled water, with the exception of natural mineral water, is regulated to the same standard as drinking water. It is best not to use bottled water labelled as 'Natural Mineral Water' as it can have high levels of sodium (salt) and other minerals, although it rarely does. 'Natural Mineral Water' can be used if no other water is available, for as short a time as possible, as it is important to keep babies hydrated. If bottled water is used to make up infant formula it should be boiled once (rolling boil for 1 minute), and cooled in the normal way. Ready-to-use formula that does not need added water can also be used.

Great care should be taken with boiled water to avoid burns and scalds as accidents can easily happen, especially with children.

De bharr saincheisteanna oibriúcháin ag an ionad cóireála uisce

Tá Uisce Éireann agus Comhairle Contae na Gaillimhe ar an eolas go bhfuil an soláthar uisce i gceantar Charna/ Chill Chiaráin atá ag brath ar uisce ó Sholáthar Charna/ Chill Chiaráin i mbaol toisc deacrachtaí oibríochtúla ag an ionad cóireála uisce.

De thoradh sin, agus ag eascairt as comhairliúchán le Feidhmeanacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte, tá Uisce Éireann agus Comhairle Contae na Gaillimhe ag eisiúint Fógra 'Uisce a Fhiuchadh' i bhfeidhm láithreach bonn chun sláinte thomhaltóirí a chosaint.

Baineann an fógra seo atá chun dáta le tuairim is 2, 294 custaiméir sna limistéir atá imlínithe sa léarscáil thall.

Ní foláir do thomhaltóirí atá faoi réir an fhógra seo a gcuid uisce a fhiuchadh sula n-úsáidfear é.

Féach ar léarscáil den limistéar lena mbaineann

Caithfear uisce a fhiuchadh (fiuchtar an t-uisce go fíochmhar ar feadh 1 nóiméad agus fuaraítear é ansin) d'fhonn:

  • uisce a ól
  • deochanna a ullmhú atá déanta le huisce
  • sailéid agus bianna eile nach gcócaráiltear a ullmhú sula n-itear iad
  • fiacla a scuabadh/ a chraosfholcadh
  • leac oighir a dhéanamh. Bí cinnte de go gcaitheann tú amach aon chiúbanna leac oighir atá i gcuisneoirí agus i reoiteoirí agus uisce scagtha i gcuisneoirí.

TÁBHACHTACH:Fiuchaigh an t-uisce trí é a thabhairt go dtí an pointe go mbeidh sé ar fiuchadh go fíochmhar agus lig dó fuarú.

  • Leithris a shruthlú
  • Plandaí agus bláthanna a uisciú

Uisce ullmhaithe amháin is ceart a úsáid sna cúinsí seo a leanas:

  • Nuair atá bianna á ullmhú nach gcócarálfar (mar shampla sailéid a ní agus a ullmhú)
  • Bainne Foirmle do Naíonáin: Nuair a bhíonn Fógra Uisce a Fhiuchadh i bhfeidhm, is féidir leat bainne foirmle do naíonáin a ullmhú le huisce ón sconna ach é a fhiuchadh uair amháin (uisce a fhiuchadh go fíochmhar ar feadh nóiméad amháin) agus é a fhuarú roimhré. Is féidir uisce buidéil a úsáid chun bainne foirmle naíonáin a dhéanamh. Tá uisce buidéil (seachas uisce mianraí nádúrtha) faoi réir rialachán ar chomhchaighdéan le huisce óil. Is fearr gan uisce buidéil leis an lipéad 'Uisce Mianraí Nádúrtha' a úsáid toisc gur féidir ardleibhéil de shodiam (salann) agus mianraí eile a bheith ann cé nach minic a bhíonn sé sin i gceist. Is féidir 'Uisce Mianraí Nádúrtha' a úsáid sa chás nach bhfuil aon uisce eile ar fáil ach é a úsáid don tréimhse ama is lú, tá sé tábhachtach naíonáin a choiméad hiodráitithe. Má úsáidtear uisce buidéil chun bainne foirmle naíonáin a dhéanamh ba cheart é a fhiuchadh uair amháin, (fiuctha go fíochmhar ar feadh nóiméad amháin) agus fuaraithe sa ghnáthshlí. Is féidir bainne foirmle naíonái- le-húsáid nach gá uisce a chur leis a úsáid freisin.

Bí cúramach i gcónaí: Ní mór a bheith fíor-chúramach le huisce fiuchta chun dónna agus scalltaí a sheachaint. Is féidir le timpistí tarlú go héasca, go háirithe nuair a bhíonn leanaí i gceist.
