Night-time water restrictions on Inis Oírr lifted with immediate effect

Uisce Éireann and Galway County Council wish to advise customers on Inis Oírr that essential overnight water restrictions that were in place on the public water supply have been lifted.

Water restrictions have been in effect on the Island nightly between 11pm and 7am and were introduced in order to conserve the low water resources on the Island.

Commenting, Eoin Hughes, Uisce Éireann said: "The restrictions were necessary over the summer months to ensure a continuous daily water supply was available for residents and businesses for hygiene and other essential purposes. Supplies were increased by a significant amount of tankering of water by sea from Rossaveel over the past number of months. Thankfully water reserves on the island have recovered and are currently sufficient to ensure a continuous water supply into the autumn. Uisce Éireann and Galway County Council will continue to monitor and maintain the supply for our customers on Inis Oírr.

"We would like to thank residents, businesses and visitors to the Island for their conservation efforts during the restrictions."

Previous Updates

Ag obair i gcomhpháirt le Comhairle Contae na Gaillimhe, tá Uisce Éireann ag moladh do chónaitheoirí agus do ghnólachtaí in Inis Oírr uisce a chaomhnú de bharr titim ar an leibhéal uisce sa taiscumar. Beidh na srianta i bhfeidhm chuile oíche ón 11 go dtí an 7 ón 07 Aibreán.

Deir Rónan Daly, Uisce Éireann go bhfuil;

"Na srianta seo a bheas i bhfeidhm i rith na hoíche an-tábhachtach chun an gnáth sholáthar a chinntiú i rith an lae. Tá am na srianta uisce curtha i bhfeidhm mar atá ionas gur mbeidh éifeacht a bheag acu ar mhuintir an oileán. Tá muid ag impí ar phobal Inis Oírr a bheith ciallmhar agus iad ag úsáid a gcuid uisce óil. Is féidir 6 lítear uisce sa nóiméad a shábháil má chasann tú as an sconna agus tú ag níochán do chuid fiacla. Moltaí beaga praicticiúla mar sin atá muid ag moladh do dhaoine a ghlacadh san áireamh. Tá breis eolais ar an suíomh www.water.ie maidir le caomhnú uisce."

Ba mhaith le hUisce Éireann agus le Comhairle Contae na Gaillimhe leithscéal a ghabháil as aon mhíchaoithiúlacht agus ba mhaith leo buíochas a ghabháil leis an bpobal roimh ré as ucht a gcomhair. Coinneofar daoine ar an eolas faoi na leibhéil stórála uisce sna taiscumair agus tabharfar fógra do thomhaltóirí nuair a bheidh siad in ann filleadh ar a gcuid uisce a úsáid ar an ngnáthbhealach.

Na Príomhleideanna a mholann Uisce Éireann maidir le caomhnú uisce:

Saor ó ligean: Seiceáil an bhfuil do theach saor ó ligean. Seiceáil an bhfuil aon róshreabhadh ann agus deisigh aon sconnaí, sistéil nó píobáin atá ag sileadh.

  • Ná fág an sconna ag rith: Má scuabann tú do chuid fiacla agus an sconna ag rith, úsáidfidh tú suas le 6 lítear in aghaidh an nóiméid - is méid uafásach é sin. Ní úsáidfidh tú ach 1 lítear uisce má scuabann tú do chuid fiacla agus an sconna curtha as.
  • Cithfholcadh vs. Folcadh: Úsáidtear 80 lítear uisce sa mheánfholcadh. I gcomparáid leis sin, ní úsáidtear ach 49 lítear sa mheán-chithfholcadh a mhaireann seacht nóiméad. Chun ollchoigilt uisce a dhéanamh, glac cithfholcadh seachas folcadh.
  • Níos lú ama: Toisc go n-úsáidtear 7 lítear uisce in aghaidh an nóiméid sa mheán-chithfholcadh, ní gá duit ach aon nóiméad amháin a ghearradh ó do chithfholcadh cúig nóiméad chun suas le 7 lítear a choigilt in aghaidh an lae!
  • Lódáilte go hiomlán: Déan cinnte de go mbíonn do mhiasniteoir agus do mheaisín níocháin lódáilte go hiomlán i gcónaí. Úsáideann meaisín níocháin nua-aimseartha thart ar 65 lítear uisce in aghaidh an chiogail. Úsáideann miasniteoir 20 lítear in aghaidh an chiogail. Má dhéanann tú cinnte de go mbíonn siad lódáilte go hiomlán, ní hé amháin go gcaomhnóidh tú uisce, ach laghdóidh tú do bhillí fuinnimh freisin.
  • Ná sruthlaigh an t-uisce ar fad ar shiúl: Sruthlaítear síos an leithreas aon trian den uisce ar fad a úsáidtear sa bhaile. Bíonn sistéil mhóra áirithe éifeachtach go fóill fiú amháin nuair a shruthlaítear go bog iad. Cuir gléas díláithriúcháin isteach sa sistéal (áit nach mbeidh sé sa bhealach ar pháirteanna gluaisteacha) chun uisce a choigilt.
  • Ná déan dearmad ar uisce a bhailiú: Sáracmhainn do do ghairdín is ea uisce báistí. Bailigh uisce báistí ó do gháitéir le buta uisce, ach déan cinnte de go mbíonn an coimeádán mór cumhdaithe go slán i gcónaí ar mhaithe le do shábháilteacht.

Uisce Éireann and Galway County Council are appealing to customers on Inis Oírr to conserve water in whatever way possible as essential overnight water restrictions are being introduced due to a drop in reservoir levels on the island. The restrictions will be in place nightly from 11pm until 7am starting Thursday, 7th April 2022.

Rónan Daly, Uisce Éireann's Asset Operations Lead for Galway is mindful of the impact that these restrictions can have on customers but stresses their importance: "These restrictions are necessary to ensure a continuous daily water supply is available for residents and businesses on Inis Oírr. The timing of these restrictions will mean minimal disruption to customers on the island.

"We are asking customers to be mindful of how they use water. However it is important to continue to follow the HSE COVID-19 guidance on hand washing.

"While handwashing remains a priority, simple water conservation efforts can have a big impact on reducing demand on the supply. Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth and shaving can save up to 6 litres of water per minute. Taking a shower instead of a bath or using a watering can rather than a hose when gardening can also make a big difference in water use. We are also reminding people with responsibility for properties that are currently unoccupied to check for leaks and turn off water where it is not required. There are lots more tips on how to conserve water in your home on our website at https://www.water.ie/conservation/."

Uisce Éireann and Galway County Council would like to thank customers for their efforts as work continues to ensure continuity of water supply for all.
