Malainn Water Mains Replacement
National Leakage Reduction Programme
Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Kerry County Council, has replaced problematic water mains in Malainn, Co. Kerry to provide a more reliable water supply and reduce high levels of leakage.
The works involved the replacement of over 3km of problematic water mains with new modern pipes. The programme to replace the water mains in Malainn, Co. Kerry commenced in late September. These works were carried out as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme.
The section of works took place from the Tulaig junction on the N70 (across the road from the Ring of Kerry Equestrian Centre) and end at the T-junction at Kealafreaghane West.
The worksalso involved laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers' property boundaries and connecting it to the customers' water supply.
The works were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward & Burke Construction and were completed by late November.
What are the benefits of the works?
The benefits of the leakage reduction works include:
- A Reliable Water Supply - Replacement of water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
- Reduced Leaks - Replacement of water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
- Improved Operation and Maintenance - These works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.
Will customers be affected by the works?
Areas of work were limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. To deliver the works safely and efficiently, a road closure was in place from Monday 18th September - Friday 11th November 2023 inclusive. The road was closed from the Tulaig junction on the N70 (opposite the Ring of Kerry Equestrian Centre) and end at the T-junction at Kealafreaghane West.
Local diversions were in place during this time along the N70 (opposite the Ring of Kerry Equestrian Centre) until St. Finian's Church crossroads. The diversion continued onto the L4010 towards Mastergeehy, and diverted at the crossroads towards Inchivata.
Local and emergency traffic were always maintained for duration of overall project.
The works involved some short-term water interruptions and the project team ensured that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned water interruptions.
