Positive development for Tralee area as mains replacement works set to begin
Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Kerry County Council, is replacing problematic trunk water mains in Ash Hill/Mount Nicholas/Lissataggle to improve security of supply, reduce high levels of leakage and improve water quality. This is a further section of the project that began in November 2021 with works about to begin at Moriarty's Cross on the L2022 towards Ash Hill (through Lisnataggle and Mount Nicholas) for approximately 4km.
The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward and Burke in conjunction with Kerry County Council and are a part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme. It is expected that the works will be completed in July of this year.
Speaking about the works, Uisce Éireann's Programme Delivery Lead, Steven Blennerhassett said; "We are delighted to continue with the replacement of these pipes in Ash Hill/Lissataggle as it will improve the quality of water supply for the community here. The benefits will see fewer bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area. The new pipes will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground. All in all, it is a very positive development for the locality and the wider Tralee area."
In order to complete the works in an efficient and safe manner, a road closure is required on the L2012 (Ashill to Moriarity's Cross) from 7 March to 29 July 2022. Diversions will be in place for duration of the works, will be signposted on approach and local access will be maintained. Southbound traffic will take the right turn toward Bellfield Plant Nursery, the L2018 Garraun Road to Ballyfinane and continue on the Farranfore to Tralee Road to the opposite end of the road closure. Northbound traffic will take the Farranfore to Tralee Road to Ballyfinane, and the L2018 Garraun Road.

Uisce Éireann has invested over €500 million between 2017 and the end of 2021 to reduce leakage and replace old pipes on the public water network. Fixing leaks can be complicated but we are making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2021 it was reduced to 38%.
