Award Winner
Recognising excellence in promoting safety on infrastructure delivery for Uisce Éireann.
James O'Gara
- Construction Site Foreman, Murphy Ireland
- Donegal Towns & Villages, Ramelton, Milford, Rathmullan (RMR), Wastewater Project
Nominated by: Martin McGrath, Resident Engineer, Jennings O’Donovan
- James is noted by Martin and the site supervision staff as being a role model for creating and nurturing a positive open culture on site, one that every person who comes to work on the site quickly adopts.
- This is seen in the daily site whiteboard meetings which James has with the various supervisors for each activity. James actively encourages everyone to participate and welcomes all feedback. He is strong in feeding back observations to management, supervision and workforce alike.
- James fosters an open approach by asking site teams about what is happening in the next day and week; who needs to be involved and how will the work be carried out. James always gives the recognition to things going well, but equally asks are there any risks or areas for improvement.
- In the nomination, Martin also gave examples of James’ proactive approach to hydrology and other issues on site. Martin notes that the results of James’s presence on site can be seen in the high quality of the works and the consistently high HSQE inspection scores. But equally the real gauge is that everyone on site is content and going about their business.
John McElwaine, IDD Programme Manager, presented James with his award on site. James is donating the value of his voucher to Epilepsy Ireland and his employer, Murphy Ireland, are matching this amount.
