Cork City Water Supply - Western Trunk Watermain

Uisce Éireann is progressing with significant upgrades to the water network across Cork City.

Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Cork City Council, is working to improve the security of water supply across Cork City through the delivery of three projects as part of the Cork City Water Supply Scheme. Farrans Construction is delivering these three projects on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

We are upgrading Cork City trunk watermains to increase security of supply and reduce leakage of large strategic mains in Cork City.

Western Trunk Watermain

This project involves the construction of a 5.5km link between the Cork City Water Supply Scheme and the Cork Harbour and City Water Supply Scheme, as supplied from Inniscarra Water Treatment Plant. This watermain will provide additional water supply capacity to Cork City by providing a strategic connection between the water supply schemes and will provide necessary headroom, to facilitate growth and also increase security of supply.

What is involved as part of this project?

As part of this project Uisce Éireann will:

  • Connect to an existing 1500mm diameter city and harbour trunk (city ring) main at Curraheen.
  • Construct a new 5.5 km trunk main connecting to the Cork City WSS at Lee Road Water Treatment Plant.
  • This project will include a crossing of the River Lee and critical road arteries into Cork City.
  • Connect to the Lee Road Water Treatment Plant and new pumping regime and into existing network.

Uisce Éireann is working proactively with our delivery partners and as part of a multi-agency working group to ensure that our construction works are carried out in a controlled and safe manner, in keeping with Government and HSE guidelines to protect workers, their families and the broader community.

No, there will be no access restrictions to the carpark during the works.

Topsoil will be temporarily stored within the works area and will be used to reinstate the area following installation of the pipeline.

All excavated areas will be securely fenced off.

No, tree removal will not be required as part of these works. Minor branch cutting works were completed in early June to ensure a safe working space for works. A survey was carried out by a qualified Ecologist who determined that this activity falls under the exemption described in Section 40 (2) (e) of the Wildlife Act (exemption from the prohibition on vegetation cutting in the course of road or other construction works)

Mulch was given to Field of Dreams / Down Syndrome Cork at the Clash Road as part of their raised beds and vegetable garden projects.

No, the works will not have any impact on the pedestrian walkway running along the Lee Fields.

The area will be topsoiled using the original topsoil and seeded back to grass. This will be completed by the end of September 2021. Full reinstatement with established grass regrowth is expected in Spring 2022.
