Reduced water pressure in areas of north Dublin due to major water mains burst in Fingal

10 May 2024

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section.

Uisce Éireann is aware some customers have been experiencing intermittent low pressure in the Blanchardstown, Coolmine, Carpenterstown and Castleknock areas of Dublin 15. A burst occurred on the main feeding these areas which required extensive digging and excavation at the site. Given the level of repairs required it was necessary to put in place contingency measures to maintain the water supply to these areas. The burst is in close proximity to critical supplies including nearby medical facilities and is also close to the Tolka River, the repair works required are extremely complex.

Our crews had temporarily diverted the supply for the area to a back feed, doing so meant water supplies were routed over longer distances through the pipes with greater flow. As a result, some customers were experiencing low pressure at intervals throughout the day.

Specialised crews completed works onsite yesterday, Thursday the 9th of May, putting in place a repair to the existing pipe, this work has been successful and means that pressures for all areas are improving with the expectation low pressure issues should further reduce over the weekend. Further permanent repair works will be needed onsite which will necessitate a water outage for a short period. Extensive planning is required before an agreed date for these works and we will communicate any outage period to all customers in advance.

In the interim pressure loggers installed throughout the Dublin 15 area will continue to monitor the pressures in the network.

We would like to thank you for your continued patience whilst we work to provide a permanent solution. Should you require further assistance, please contact our Customer Service Team by phone on 1800 278 278, by email to operations@water.ie or on X by tagging @IWCare.

Pressure loggers have been installed throughout the Dublin 15 area to monitor the impacts, it’s understood that while pressure may be low for some customers during the day, the evening time pressure is good and should fill properties tanks.

Our team are aware of the impact that this situation is having on customers in the area, we would like to thank you for your continued patience whilst we work to provide a permanent solution. Following a burst to a major water main in the Blanchardstown area in early April, we are aware that some areas are still affected with intermittent low pressure. Extensive reconfiguration of the Water Supply network means that most customers haven’t seen any impact, however a number of customers may continue to experience slightly lower pressures than normal.

Following a deep excavation and specialist Condition Assessments, the extent of damage to the large pipe is significantly greater than originally envisaged, further complicating the repair.

Given the proximity to the river Tolka and the M3, consultation with relevant stakeholders is necessary prior to proceeding with further excavation works. An Incident Team has been stood up and additional pipe rehabilitation experts have been mobilised, to ascertain the most effective and efficient repair methodology.

Areas where customers may experience lower pressure include:

  • Carpenterstown
  • Castleknock
  • Laurel Lodge
  • Coolmine
  • Parts of Clonsilla

We would again like to thank our customers for their ongoing patience and understanding, we will continue to provide an update on repairs including a timeline as the works progress.
